Canada announces new polices to help international students with post-graduation work permit

Canada’s new policies will help international students holders of a post-graduation work permit (PGWP). The pandemic’s disruption and uncertainty have jeopardized their chances of getting the work experience they need to apply for permanent residence.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT

Recognizing that students contribute so much to Canada, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marco Mendicino, has announced that former international graduates with post-graduation work permits (PGWPs) will have the opportunity to apply for an open work permit.

Many international students were affected by the pandemic and found not find a job to obtain the work experience they need to apply for a permanent residence in Canada.

Those affected by the pandemic with an expired or expiring PGWP will have a unique chance to apply for another open work permit. These will be valid for 18 months and allow former international students to remain in Canada, continue to seek employment and build their future in this country.

BENEFICIARY

In 2019, more than 58,000 graduates successfully applied to immigrate permanently bring strong employment and language skills, bolstered by their Canadian education and work experience, so they are typically well positioned to apply for permanent resident status.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada estimates that as many as 52,000 graduates with expired or expiring PGWPs could benefit from the public policy.

HOW TO APPLY

For international students to be eligible for the open work permit, they must be in Canada and also:

  • Have either a PGWP that expired on or after 30 January 2020 or a PGWP that expires in four months or less from the date of application;
  • A valid temporary status or be applying to restore their status.

The application process will open on 27 January and remain open until 27 July 2021. Details will soon be posted on the IRCC website.

What you need to know before hiring a Homestay

What you need to know before hiring a Homestay

Homestay is a type of accommodation where an international student lives with a local family. You can hire this service through an English school, in its accommodation department, directly with a homestay family or a third-party accommodation service provider.

Homestay is one of the most affordable and popular options for students, of all ages when they are studying abroad.

If you are considering this type of accommodation, here are some important tips we would like to share.

FAMILY’S SELECTION

Educational institutions have their own accommodation department and their responsibility is to carefully select families to accommodate students.

Studying in a multicultural country such as Canada, you might have a multicultural family hosting you as well.

Happy family

You might have a multicultural family hosting you.

THE PROCESS

Including accommodation on your study abroad program is optional.

On the application form, it will be asked about the student’s health and special needs so the school can select a family that fits their needs and proceed with the booking.

Two weeks prior to students’ arrival he/she will receive all family information.

TIP: Book your accommodation as soon as possible. Especially if you plan to travel during summertime.

MEALS

For security reasons, in a homestay, the student won’t be allowed to cook.

For that, the meals will be provided by the host family. Some families offer only breakfast while others also provide lunch and dinner.

TIP: Keep your mind open to new types of food according to the country you are travelling to. In Canada, for example, a typical lunch could be a sandwich once dinner is considered the main meal of the day and happens around 7 pm.

ROOM

You can book a single or double room, in case you are not travelling alone. Some homestays also offer in-suite rooms, but in most homestays, you will probably share a washroom with another student.

It’s your responsibility to keep your room clean and organized.

SCHOOL’S DISTANCE

You will probably live around 40 to 50 minutes from your school by public transportation. The distance and travelling time might vary according to the city you are travelling to.

Language schools are always located in the downtown area close to the subway or bus stop and big colleges are usually located in the suburb providing more space and large infrastructure to the students.

PRICE

Unlike language programs where the weekly price is proportionally lower according to the number of weeks you buy, in the accommodation, you can buy 4 or 24 weeks and the price per week will be the same and today this price varies from $225 to $300 per week.

We advise you to book 4 weeks of homestay, so you have a place to stay and a local family to host you once you arrive in a new country.

If you like the family, the house location and the food you can extend your stay purchasing extra weeks.

COMMUNICATION

Regardless of your language level try to always communicate with your host family.

Remember they use to receive students from different backgrounds who are travelling to learn or improve their knowledge of a new language.

SAFETY

Keep all your value objects, documents and extra money locked in your luggage.

Unless previously authorized by your host family do not invite or bring your friends to your homestay.

You are now a member of a new family and must do your part to maintain a good and safe environment for yourself and the others

8 reasons to consider an online program

8 reasons to consider an online program

The online program option is helping students who need to improve their language level to be accepted in Higher Education institutions like a College or University saving especially time and money.

In-person classes offer a deeper experience with a new language, we can not argue against that. But, why wait for the right moment to travel abroad if you can start your program right now?

1 – SAVE MONEY

Some schools are giving more than 50% OFF in their online program’s tuition fee.

Language program students from many countries can not work while study and some need an average of 8 months of class before starting a College program.

Studying from home allows you to save money with your personal expenses like rent, food, transportation and more.

2 – SAVE TIME

Let’s assume that you are going to need eight months of English before start your College.

For attending an in-person class, you are going to issue a student visa before starting your course.

Considering that within a month you get all your documents ready to apply for your student visa, the Embassy will take an average of three months to issue your student visa.

You can start your program while you prepare for your visa application, once you get your visa you finish your program abroad and get ready to start your College.

3 – FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE

You can choose to study in the morning, afternoon, night or late at night. Informing the school within a week in advance you can change to a more convenient schedule.

4 – The SAME MIX OF NATIONALITIES

Like in-person classes, your virtual classmates will be from all around the world. You guys will interact and chat during class activities.

5 – CERTIFICATION

Like in-person classes, the online program also provides valid certification that will help you with the documents you need to apply for a College or University program, job position, job application and more.

6 – METHODOLOGY

With classes from Monday to Friday, usually 15 hours of class per week, an online program offers the same teachers, of an in-person class, the same methodology and material.

7 – FINISH ABROAD

You can start your program online and finish it abroad.

8 – NO VISA NEEDED

You do not need to apply for a visa to attend an online program.
